Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Eating healthy is good for you and will pay off in the long run. The food pyramid is considered a guideline, but not something that has to be followed all the time. Eating healthy is something that many people unfortunately struggle with. The lure of fast food and other easy and fast choices leads people to pick whatever is available or seems to taste the best.

Eating healthy is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and is something that should be taught at a young age. Most nights I struggle to find something to eat that is first, actually edible and second, is somewhat healthy. Eating healthy is about choices - not obsession. Eating healthy is awesome, but if you want to get that body conditioned, then you have to adopt a fitness exercise routine that works for you. If you’re currently overweight, then you should probably begin with cardio exercises.

Eating healthy is always a good thing. Eating healthy is and has been top priority for us for 15 years. We make sacrifices in other areas to eat this way. Eating healthy is pretty much a matter of selecting lighter versions of traditional holiday foods. Vegetables and starches such as breads and rolls are the usual side dishes on Easter.

Head lice can be found anywhere

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The nymph is what the nits hatch into from the eggs. They are not fully formed head lice but they mature fast. They become adult head lice in seven days. Nymphs must feed on blood to survive. The adult head lice are about the same size as a sesame seed. It can be grayish white to tan, it’s about the size of a sesame seed, and it has six legs. If the head lice are on the hair shaft of a dark haired person, they will look darker in color. The adult lice needs to feed on blood and can live up to 30 days if it is on a head. If it falls off, it will only live about 48 hours.

Head lice can be found anywhere

Head lice can be found anywhere in the world and are spread by direct contact. This means sharing a comb, brush, hat, or other hair accessories or just being in close contact with an infested person can infest someone. Contact with another child’s head is common while playing and head lice are easily passed on. Head lice do not fly but can jump from one head to another whenever people are in close contact with each other.

Day Hikes In The Grand Canyon

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

There are many ways to enjoy the Grand Canyon, but a hike into the depths of this natural wonder is far and away the most adventurous and most exciting way to get the maximum out of a visit. This is the case for several reasons.

grand canyon backpacking tours

First is that the Canyon is more than 5000 feet deep in most places, and so the geologic time that is symbolized by the layers of rock you descend through is literally mind blowing. As you descend, you will think to yourself “a river cut this!!!” Sandstone, limestone, fossils, and native american artifacts build the geologic foundation of the Canyon.

Second is the fact that remaining on the rim you get a bird’s eye view of everything but no real connection with the much of anything. Staying on the rim is only one step better than simply cruising over the Canyon in an airplane. On the contrary, when you’re hiking through it, you will have an intimate experience with the flora, fauna, the streams, the rivers, and the waterfalls of this truly phenomenal place. The best of the Canyon is beneath the rim: Phantom Ranch, Havasu Falls, Thunder Falls, Paradise Falls, Kaibab Creek, Horseshoe Mesa, Hermit Rapids…it goes on and on.

Third is that you will experience solitude and peace and quiet in one of the most crowded national parks in the United States. While millions of people visit the Grand Canyon every summer, only a couple thousand visitors trek to the bottom over an entire year. The Canyon is a place of immense scale and profound natural beauty, and so being down in the Canyon is in many ways the only activity to truly enjoy the true nature of it.

Fourth is that it involves some authentic adventure. Many people also enjoy rafting, which is a great way to experience the Canyon. What hiking offers that rafting doesn’t is an adventure that involves the full spectrum of the experience - the amazing feeling of winding one’s way down, down, down through layers of rock and into the depths of the Canyon. Then the enjoyment of the Colorado River, and of course finally the hike back out. It’s extremely rewarding to complete a hike in and out of the Grand Canyon - and when you top out and treat yourself to a very nice dinner, massage, and a night of sleep, there’s no doubt you’ve worked for it. You can relax in style, knowing you’ve done what very few people ever do.

If you’re inexperienced, it’s best to hire a tour company for an adventure like this. Don’t attempt it on your own if you don’t know what you’re doing - Grand Canyon National Park performs over 400 rescues per year, and the vast majority of those are overly ambitious hikers who try to do it on their own. There are several fantastic guide companies that will treat you like a king or queen on a trip like this, whether it’s a rim-to-rim or a down-and-back trip. Don’t wait to experience the depths of the Grand Canyon!

Is The Wii Fit An Effective Fitness Tool?

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We’ve owned a Wii Fit for nearly 2 months so I thought it was about time I gave some first impressions. I’ve got to say that overall I’m very impressed with it. Build quality is brilliant, the actual levels of the activities are broad enough to suite most people, starting of very easy and going all the way to extreme. Some of the later muscle challenges would be enough to test even the fittest person. The biggest disappointment with it as a whole is nothing to do with the fitness side, but rather the scales.

Whilst the pressure sensitive pads are great at sensing even the gentlest movements they just don’t seem very accurate as scales. Your weight will fluctuate all over the place which can put you off if you’ve been busting a gut for weeks. Wii-Fit also wants to measure your weight each day which I just don’t agree with, there is no quicker way to put somebody of trying to get slimmer than shoving their daily weight fluctuations in their face. I’d suggest you only weigh yourself once a week (and try to move the Wii Fit onto a solid surface) and ignore the BMI guide. BMI was so 1990’s! It just doesn’t take any account of natural body shape and you’ll always end up confused by it.

As a fitness tool the Wii Fit has various categories. Yoga, Muscle, Cardio and Balance. My wife (a big fan of the Wii Fit Yoga) asked one of her friends who is a Yoga instructor about it and she said that the Wii Fit Yoga moves are advanced from the start. Do it often and you’ll certainly feel the difference in your posture. The muscle exercises are all based on using your own body as resistance. This is a great way to workout and as I said above some of the challenges are really hard. I can easily push out a few hundred push-ups but having to do them deliberately slow on the Wii Fit is always a challenge. The Cardio side is probably the weakest of all, you’re just not going to get a great cardio workout in your living room. But I’ll say this, IT DOES WORK. I strapped myself to a Polar heart monitor and went at the hula, boxing and running for half an hour. I managed to burn over 220 great fatty calories. That’s not bad at all, not quite cross-trainer workout level but if you’re the sort of person who spends their evenings sat in front of the TV then it’s brilliant. Finally there are the balance games, probably the most like traditional computer games. These are great fun but I’m not sure how much they do for your balance. My balance has always been great so it’s hard to judge.

So the Wii Fit is capable of everything it promises, it will make you fitter. Even for people who just don’t like exercise, 40 minutes on the Wii Fit might be acceptable. For example last week my wife (an avid anti exercise fan) wouldn’t take a walk down the shop. It’s only 15 minutes there and back. But she would go on the Wii Fit and managed to knock out nearly an hour. Whilst the Wii Fit might not change your attitude, you’ll probably find it fun enough to keep it going.

Attaining Your Dieting Plateau

Pure Hoodia

At some point during our diets, most of us have experienced the frustration of the bathroom scale! When you first began your diet, you were dropping pounds like there was no tomorrow. The improvement was generally steady and motivating. You looked forward to hopping on that scale at about the same times every morning/week! Now something different is starting to occur. Instead of looking forward to the scale, you’ve begun to shy away from it. Don’t worry it’s not you; it’s your diet. You’ve reached what health industry professionals call a plateau. Fear not my friend this is actually a good sign.

When something like this happens, it’s very difficult to console yourself with a basis. Why didn’t I lose weight this static. Meaning they don’t change from week to week. Let’s take your current workout regimen for instance. Now I’m not saying this is exactly what you are doing, but the same theory pertains. On week 1 you do Billy Blank’s Tae-Bo DVD. On week 2 you continue with Billy Blank’s Tae-Bo DVD and so on. Your body gets used to doing the same exercises over and over and it acclimates. This is part of the reason the DVD becomes easier after a few weeks. In order for your body to continue losing weight, you need to change things up. Try a wholly new set of exercises. The same theory applies to your diet.

So what do you do when you hit that diet plateau? First it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Focus on the non-scale accomplishments. So many wonderful things happen during your weight loss journey that have nothing to do with that bathroom scale!

Best Hoodia Diet Pill

Let’s start with the simplest way to make yourself feel better. Have any pictures from before your diet began? Go grab one. Notice that your eyes are more clear and opened wider. Notice that your cheeks are more sculpted and your jaw line is more taut. Stand back a little further from the mirror and notice the changes in your body. Don’t forget to view yourself from the side and back while you’re at it. Chances are if you’ve been exercising awhile, you’re looking at some significant changes in your appearance that you might not notice everyday because they’re so gradual. Focus on how far you have come!

O.K. it’s time to stop looking in the mirror now. No really you can stop. Next move to your closet. Does it look a little empty? How many outfits don’t fit anymore because they’re getting too baggy and unattractive? Grab a pair of your old jeans and try them on. Need a belt?

Next make an appointment with your family doctor to have some lab work completed. Dieting and exercise have many health benefits besides weight loss. Drops in blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides are all benefits that come as well. Plus, physically fit people take fewer medications and get sick less often.

What you do when you reach that plateau is sit back and take pleasure for a moment. You have achieved something. Review your initial motivation for starting your weight loss journey and after that start a new regimen to keep moving forward.
